It all started with two cancelled surgeries due to Covid-19. It continued, by chance, that those surgeries were rescheduled for the same day, March 26, 2020. Next came a mutual acquaintance, who thought it would be a good idea, to connect the two women she knew who just had double mastectomies. The result- a life changing connection and friendship that was written in the stars.
From our first introductory text message, we have made the breast cancer journey together, hand in hand. Through the pain from surgery, to the fear and uncertainty from the physical changes to our bodies, to the reconstruction process, our friendship blossomed. We supported one another through our first visits to the Cancer Centre, the nightmare that was chemotherapy, and the burns from radiation. We celebrated birthday's, anniversaries, and milestones together. We looked after each other after one oophorectomy and one hysterectomy. We've shared our challenges from the ongoing hormone therapy and the aftermath of rebuilding a life that has been shattered by cancer. Needless to say, our journey has been a shared experience.
We often say we don’t know where we would be today without the other. Despite the brutal and devastating effects of cancer treatment, the road to recovery has proven to be equally difficult and sometimes, more so. The effects of a breast cancer experience are many and great, so for us, having someone who understands the impact of a cancer diagnosis has made all the difference.
Breast cancer doesn’t end when treatment ceases and neither will our friendship. We hope you enjoy learning more about us and our journey together.
Your Cancer Breasties,
Jen & Marcia
